Freelancer Embedding with Military

I work freelance and am seeking a military embed with a state National Guard unit to complete a long-term project I have been working on.

Any thoughts on the best way to make touch with military / guard units in regards to a freelance embed? Trying to figure out the chain of command and what would be the best way to go about this other than just calling a public affairs officer.
