GILLIAN LAUB: Common Ground (Israelis and Palestinians) [working title]

Gillian Laubs portraits are compositions of families, friends and strangers. Placing Palestinian and Israeli children, families, and even soldiers next to each other, the viewer is often left wondering which person belongs to which culture. These formal interiors, as well as harsh and touching scenes from around Israel and Palestine, reveal the similar struggles and universal truths of these people with seemingly irreconcilable differences. The portraits also offer such unfettered access to the human condition that the subjects lives seem to reveal themselves in the small fraction of time that is actually captured. Gillian Laub has shot extensively for The New York Times Magazine, and many other publications.
