Gjon Mili Award-Kosovo

Hi all
Just a heads up about the Gjon Mili award here in Kosovo. Gjon Mili was an Albanian photographer who worked for Life Magazine, and since 2000 the Kosovo Albanian authorities have been running a photo competition here. There is a single prize of 500 Euros. It’s a fairly small scale competition at the moment, but they are hoping to expand it in the future. This year they are looking for a lot more international entries, hence this post. Kosovo is still stuck in a limbo of sorts seven years after the war, but there are a few things happening, especially in the photo scene, that bode well for the future. I will be heading up the judges this year and it would be great if we could get some entries from around the world. As I said it’s a pretty small scale competition, and they don’t have the logistics set up to allow big entries, so just two or three photos on a cd please, there’s no theme, so anything you want, deadline is end of July. You can download the entry form here Cheers.

since it’s only 2-3 photos, is there a possibility to send by e-mail or ftp?
i rarely submit to competitions but this one looks like it’s a good cause.

Hello guys,

This is an excellent opportunity to exhibit in Kosovo.
The exhibition is held in National Art Gallery, Prishtina and they do produce a nice Catalogue that will be send by mail to all selected photographers, free of charge.
Good luck guys!
My best wishes Andrew!

Hello Andrew,
I’ve got the same question as Guilad, but the CD-thing wouldn’t bother me either.

Seeings how its Gjon Mili, you should have a category for the maddest use of a flashgun…that Picasso pic is still a corker.

The entry requirements talk about a 30×40 cm image, which is about 48MB…I’d imagine the sheer logisitc headache of setting up and maintaining FTP and e-mail etc would mitigate against it. The bandwidth probably won’t handle the amount of entries and you’ve got big problems then.

Much easier to just chuck in a CD, and a refreshing change to read an entry form which doesnt need you to have a MBA in Corporate Tort Law to see if you’ll be giving over the rights to your kidneys just by entering.

Speaking of the file size…the entry requirements talk about a 30×40 size image, so am I to assume you need a file that big? or just a smaller file for viewing purposes, and only a 48 MB from anybody who makes the cut?

Hi Sion
Prints of all the entries will be made for the judging, so don’t send small files for viewing purposes. On the other hand if you don’t have 48 meg files, don’t worry, send what you have. I was using a D2H last year, all 4 glorious megapixels (11.5 megs) of it, and the prints came out fine.

Hello. I have the same question. How old or new can be the pictures send to the Gjon Mili Award?

by Hernan Zenteno | 28 Jun 2006 02:06 | Buenos Aires, Argentina | | Report spam→
Ok, email entries are fine, the email address is gjonmili@gmail.com. Photos should have been taken since Jan 2005.

This sounds great and I would love to submit for consideration. Sorry for yet another question! I am on the road and the CD thing is tough as I am travelling through rural areas of India and there are not many reliable couriers!

If we email entries, what size should they be? Low or high res? 72 dpi, 300 dpi? What size? Thanks for your patience in answering these questions.

Thanks for that, I have some work from Porto Romano in Albania made the end of last year and a couple of months ago which deals with a community mostly from Kosovo and the far north of Albania. Would be good to try to show some of the work in that part of the world.

Hi Andrew. When we can see the winners pictures? I can not read any information about this in the award site. Thank you.

Hi Hernan. The simple answer is that I don’t know. I’ll try to find out and post it here. Thanks to everyone who sent in, they had a lot more entries this year. Judging is happening now and I would expect the results to be posted soon.

Hi all. The winners of the Gjon Mili award were announced last night at the opening of the exhibition in Prishtina. 1st Prize went to Bevis Fusha from Albania, the two runners up were Walter Astrada from Spain and Armend Aqifi from Kosovo. Congratulations to them and a big thankyou to everyone who entered. Entries were up by around 40% this year and a lot of that is down to Lightstalkers. The website is not updated yet, I’ll try to find out when that is going to happen.

very nice selection.good to see so many local/balkan photographers submitting really imaginative, diverse and intelligent work.i think you should have given a prize to the one of the female copper in the fetching suspenders though,my personal favourite!

Wow! Thanks Andrew this is great. It is exciting to see how this came together and how lightstalkers played a role in expanding the entry base. I am truly honoured to have been selected as part of the show and have my work exhibited amongst the other photographers. I am proud to have my work shown amongst photographers from other nations and exhibited for the people in Kosovo to see!
