Going on assignment? Burma example

I was reading a post about those trying to get into Burma right now. I was wondering if most of you just go where the action is, shoot, and then try and sell the photos later or are you being sent on assignment from an employer.

I need to learn the business of photojournalism. I need a mentor.

I assume most would go speculatively to shoot the photos, book your tickets etc and then tell your contacts and publications that you are going and see what comes out, if they propose anything specific to you. Waiting for be assigned before you go does not normally work as they will go for someone who is there already.
