Help: Photoshop on a netbook?
|
I’ll be traveling soon for a few months and I would like to buy a netbook (something very small) that can run photoshop and MS office.
Do any of you have any experience of running Photoshop (even an older version) on a netbook? If so which one?
Cheers,

I’m not sure you can, but I would highly discourage counting on a netbook to run PS. Aside from the processor being so slow, Netbooks come with very little RAM. I would pick either the Netbook or Photoshop, not both. Photomechanic or Lightroom might be better options.
Here are some other posts regarding this:

I use an Acer Aspire 1 when traveling. I can run Lightroom 2.2 or Photoshop7 as well as Office 2003. The netbook works really smoothly..just a little jewel.
Obviously it is not made for accurate color, but it isn’t bad…Also use Audacity to edit sound on it. These netbooks are being way underestimated in my opinion.

If you want to run Mac OS:

I’d have to agree with Ryan. Been using a netbook for over four months now and loving it. Sure, it has its limitations but it runs PS 5.5 just fine and even Nikon Capture and the like.
Not tried it with the later versions of PS as no real need for that control on the move. It all depends what you want to do with it, throughput speed etc. I mainly use it to send news and feature pictures back to the office and for that it is ideal. Obvioulsy you can pay three times as much and get a compact laptop that is far faster, but for what you pay the netbook has its place.

I use a Samsung 10" netbook with Lightroom 2.3 and it works fine (if a bit slowly). I upgraded it to 2GB RAM when I bought it. Using OpenOffice instead of MS Office but I don’t see why it wouldn’t be fine running that as well.

I run Photoshop CS4 on a 15" Macbook Pro 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 4 GB of RAM running Leopard and it works wonders.
Shooting Nikon D300, D700 and Phaseone P45+ Digital Back Raw files flawlessly, editing using Photo Mechanic, Lightroom and Photoshop CS4.
I normally process and edit hundres of pictures in a day when on the field and the configuration I have keeps me going.
Too bad the display is not bigger and even better for laaaarge field trips but is good enough and probably as good as it gets on a notebook.

I have an Asus PC900, and I ran out of hard drive space/ RAM the day I turned on the PC for the first time. Automatic updates tried to install an upgrade of Firefox, ran out of hard drive space, and died. Had to restore to default, then stop the netbook from updating. It took three attempts and a better part of an hour to do so.
With that said, I have learned real quick a netbook regardless of hard drive size, space or RAM clearly does not handle application processing very well.
except, the new Asus EeePC 900 is shipping with a Celron processor and not an Atom. I’m not sure why they went to the Celron, but they are shipping with them now, and they might be able to handle LR or PSe.
