Help arranging a billboard in Afghanistan

Hi, we’re new to lightstalkers so I hope this post is appropriate and that someone out there can help us. In short, we are looking to place a billboard in Afghanistan, most likely in Ghazni province, Kabul or Kandahar and are looking for someone in Afghanistan with the contacts to make it happen ASAP.

The longer story is that I work for Avaaz.org which is a community of 1.2 million global citizens who take action on the major issues facing the world today. Our aim is to ensure that the views and values of the world’s people — and not just political elites and unaccountable corporations — shape global decisions. Our past campaigns include co-sponsoring the new UK Foreign Secretary’s first speech (http://www.avaaz.org/en/miliband_webcast/) and a billboard/petition campaign for ‘real peace talks’ in the Middle East (http://www.avaaz.org/en/stop_the_clash/).

We recently launched a campaign demanding that the Taliban free unharmed the 23 (sadly now 22) South Korean hostages being held in Afghanistan. Our petition has reached almost 50,000 signatories and we are looking to deliver it through our own private channels. We are also designing a billboard ad that we want to place in Ghazni province, Kabul or Kandahar because the latter is the heart of the insurgency’s target audience demanding that the Taliban follow their own Afghan Pashtunwali code, a principle that requires “hospitality to all, especially guests and strangers.” This kidnapping is a clear violation of the code, offending the weary people of Afghanistan on whom they depend. See (http://www.avaaz.org/en/index.php for English and Korean versions and http://www.tolafghan.com/index.php?news_id=7429 for a Pashtun version). However, we need a contact in Afghanistan who would be able to arrange for the ad to be placed on a billboard. Any dice?

We would be most appreciative. Please contact Iain Keith ASAP at iain@avaaz.org.

Many thanks in advance,

I don’t have the contact information with me this week, but there is an advertising agency located inside the Kabul City Center, and they have experience with billboard advertising.

Many thanks guys. Thorne, I cannot send you a pm because our account is less than 2 weeks old. Would you kindly email my colleague Iain (iain AT avaaz DOT org) with the contact info for the agency in Kabul City Center? Many thanks. bnr

I think trying to help to free these hostages is important and noble. Keep in mind that the literacy rate in Afghanistan is about 28%. In Kandahar it is almost 0%. I have worked in this region and I don’t know if most people would even understand let alone read the billboard. Symbols and pictures work best.

It is an intersting concept, but the ground conditions are very challenging if not impossible. Keep this in mind with what you put on the boards.
