How to repair corrupt TIF file
|
Yesterday I was editing in Photoshop one of my pictures (and it took me some time to do that). When I finished I saved it as a TIF file and copy to external drive. Today when I tried to open the file Photoshop gave me this notice “…it is not right kind of document”. I can’t open or even preview the file with any other software I have on my PC. It the properties it’s showing that the file is still 14MB as it should be. Does anyone of you had similar experience. Is there is any software that can repair corrupted files (especially TIF)?
Thanks in advance for any suggestions how to solve my problem.

I’ve had that happen when I coppied the file to quickly after saving. The computer didn’t get a chance to fully update. Try changing the suffix to whatever file format it was before, and then opening. If not, you may be out of luck.
|
make sure the"." is in the right place before the Tiff suffix or that you accidentally delete it.
|
I’ve checked the file name and it’s correct. I think the problem is in the file itself. Any other solutions before I will start editing file again?
|
type out the file name exactly as you have it…send it here so we can take a peek.
|
couple of things you could try:
open the file with Preview (if you’re on a Mac – dunno a PC equivalent) then resave.
rename the file with “.tiff” as opposed to “.TIF”
You should also have 2 copies of the worked on file. Are they both giving the same message?

Gregory: I’ve just send you the file. I hope 14MB is not to big for you email account. Thanks

Al…got the file…name is OK…but just has a generic icon and won’t open in PS or Windows. Maybe time to do it over. Don’t know what could have happened.

Gregory, thanks for trying. I appreciate it!
Well, time to work :-(

Aleksander, try opening and saving using a different programme. This worked out for me once.

Aleksander,
You can send the file to me as I am working on a Mac and can verify the file for you.

Thanks. I’m sending you the file

I had the same problem but with a CR2 file. The image would open in preview, but Photoshop gave me the “its not the right kind of document”.
I tried a lot of things, and the only help i received was from “file juicer”. It recovered my file, but only as a jpeg. Google that program and download a trial version to see if you can at least salvage a jpeg out of your tiff…
|
I looked at the file in HexEdit and it was a null file, i.e. there was nothing in the Tiff file except zeros. Nothing to recover.
