I'm retiring... Anybody want my body armor?
|
Since I am tired of getting shot at, I am quitting combat journalism in favor of a more sedentary life. I still have nearly-new body armor, however, collecting dust, wasting money. It’s level IV (military-spec, but civilian-purchased and completely legal). Anybody have ideas on how I should sell it? EBay won’t allow me to sell the armor plates that come with it, or the groin protector (eBay has drawn a very arbitrary line in the sand, I suppose). Any suggestions?

Would the plates be compatible with an Interceptor vest?
|
The general specs are this:
purchased originally (new) from www.bulletproofme.com (as per DoD recommendation for embed in a combat zone).
Color: Coyote Tan
Size: Medium (sizing chart is here: http://bulletproofme.com/Sizing.shtml)
Style: Interceptor, VERY similar to last US military issue. Velcro closure in front
Specs and photos for the vest:
http://bulletproofme.com/TACTICAL_Body_Armor.shtml#OTV
Specs for the ceramic plates:
http://bulletproofme.com/Body_Armor_Accessories_Rifle_Protection.shtml
Includes vest, two rifle plates (paired as front and back), groin protector, throat protector, neck protector, and two shoulder protectors (I never wore these).
Originally purchased for $1,830 to my doorstep. I’ll sell everything for $950 plus shipping (this needs to be insured). Please note that I cannot ship rifle plates out of the country. US State Dept allows it after approval of a lengthy request process, but I have been unable to even determine how difficult it is. My guess: virtually impossible.
Additional notes:
1. Remember that this is used. While fully intact, there is a grease stain on the inside back.
2. My name and blood type are scrawled in permanent marker across the back rifle plate flap. This MIGHT come out with rubbing alcohol, but I haven’t tried.
3. All other signs of use are normal wear and tear.
4. I was never shot while wearing this vest, or thrown by a blast wave. In other words, it’s fully functional, regardless of cosmetic marring.

You can sell it through Craigslist…. it will sell fast since you are in a military/government-heavy area.
Good luck!
|
You can auction it off on gunbroker.com. And I’ve never looked into whether there was restrictions on shipping armor and have done it repeated through the postal service. I simply write “ceramic plates” or “vest” on the forms.

And wishing you the best with your new career path…

I haven’t come over to LS for a while now, and this post reminded me of why I always come back eventually. You don’t get many requests for body armor around here, although I am always in the market for piano wire, especially when the public gets overly obstreperous.

Does it come with a clap-proof cricket box?
|
You know, Mike, I’m pretty sure I don’t want to know what that means…
