Iraq Visa for Journalists

I’m only planning on spending my time in area controlled by KRG, is it necessary for me to get a journalist visa from the Iraqi embassy? US citizen.

Was just informed by KRG reps in DC that it was not necessary if I stayed in KRG areas. Unfortunately I want to venture to Kirkuk, and it is necessary there. Have you been recently? Did you have a different experience?
