Kiev - Accommodation and Security Restictions

Hi All,

Is anyone covering Kiev? I’m flying in from the UK next week, are there any restrictions on Armour, Gas Masks etc? Can anyone suggest a good hotel/hostel to hold up in?

Best,

Matt

I’ve got a place to stay, still no clear information on restrictions around PPE?

I was there in December. I’m still in touch with some people on the ground, but don’t know for sure what is officially happening on a daily basis.

The new law seems to forbid helmets, gas masks, and body armor, but is largely ignored by everyone, it seems. Arguably it does not apply to press, but most people don’t get local press passes (the demonstrators were giving some out when I was there) so proving that your are press may be an issue. Bring your foreign press pass. I don’t know whether there are searches for body security items at the airport, though I don’t remember there being any inbound searches other than the usual customs area. Make sure your stuff is in a bag.

The police have periodically targeted and beaten journalists (and arrested a few), especially photographers and video people. Rubber and lead bullets are beginning to appear and be used. It’s a very fluid situation and anything could happen at any time.

In short, for an experienced conflict/social issue photojournalist, it’s not really an unusual situation, IMHO.

Here from someone on the ground yesterday in Kiev:

“Andrei Kisilev, a reporter gone missing from Lenta.ru yesterday is found. He was stripped, put to his knees on the snow and otherwise bullied and humiliated. He was also beaten and is in rather bad shape, needs face stitches, but sounds like it’s going to be OK.”

There is a structure to help find journalists who “go missing.” To access it requires some effort and I don’t have authority to give out the info here. I’ll send it to you by personal email (if your address is in your profile).

There is a video on YouTube of his arrest, very humiliating, he’s totally naked, force to show up in public, beaten, very awful…

Hi there, I am flying into Kiev tomorrow morning and be there three days. Are there any special ways to get to the camps and not to run into police forces? Is a fixer a help? And I have a gas mask with me; in case. I am will have in a backpack, but I am not sure what happens if I get searched.

I’ve been in Kiev on 19-20 January, during the bigest riots. Don’t worry about the laws forbifing wearing helmets and masks, all press and protesters are wearing them. Press west ( orange one) would be great too. As far as I know, there is quite calm now, but it is not a good idea walking alone nearby the police officers, especially Berkut ones ( with blue uniforms). Younger people speak well english, you don’t need any fixer, they cooperate with pleasure with media, just ask what you need.

About accomodation, there is a lot of hostels nearby EuroMajdan, you can always sleep in press centre.

Hi Alex or anyone on the ground in Kiev currently. What’s the situation now now? Seems like there is another big mobilization now that the president is returning to work? I’m in Thailand, been covering the protests/elections here, and thinking about heading to Kiev on my way back to New York so looking for information from people there currently.

Hi Andrew, I have left Kiew two days ago but will be back by Wednesday night. During my time there everything was very peaceful, no riots or anything else happened.
If guess you have an International Press Card? This is what you need to into the barricades and onto the Maidan Square; bring a helmet and wear, one for safety issues, the other you won’t freeze. Let me know if you are heading towards Kiev, maybe we can meet somewhere there

I have accreditation from a Ukrainian newspaper in Chicago and am traveling to Kyiv Feb 8th. Alexander, do you think I will encounter issues with access using these credentials?

I don’t have an international press card, but do have a press letter from my agency explaining who we are and who we distribute to (NYT, Time, etc etc) and to please afford me access as a member of the working press. I have them make me a new one specific to each country and use it to get local press credentials. Will that work?

@ Rich: If it is written in Ukrainian, then its fine. Most of the guys who secure the barricades don’t speak English, if you have something written in their language, it is much easier for you to get into the occupied places.
@ Andrew: Same here, have it written in English and Ukrainian to show to the guards. When will you guys be there? I am arriving tomorrow night; my mobile number +4917660982397 get in touch with me. And for Hotels: The Ukraineh-Hotel is cheap and the best. its just 1min walk from the maidan square.

Awesome thanks to the info Rich, super helpful. I’ll get in touch when I’m on my way. Sitting tight in Bangkok for the next couple days to see what happens- feels like something might shortly in terms of coup or government stepping down.
