Leica M8 Digital Rangefinder For Sale

In an effort to cut back on the amount of kit I am dragging around I am parting with a Black Leica M8 body, it comes with 3 batteries and all leads and disks. It has not had heavy use but does have a few marks here and there. I am only asking £1800 or $2700 + shipping so I guess it is a cheap as you will find one anywhere. As per previous posts I have a pristine Black Leica 21mm 2.8 Asph going for £1500 or $2250 and a 28mm finder for £100 or $150. Please get in touch if you are interested in any of this kit. Cheers, Jason.

Can it be upgraded to the M8.2? What does this cost? are you still keeping another M8 for yourself or are you completely parting ways with M8s? I ask because I really want to get one to replace my film Leica Ms but feel I will still need to be carrying around a 5D for low light? Is this the case? Is the noise on the M8 over 400 ASA really ‘film like’ as some have said?

No noise above 400 ASA/320 ISO up to 1250 ISO/1600 ASA with new firmware for M8 2.002, which does include Auto ISO as well.

Hi Davin, I hadn’t looked into the new firmware but I did see on the Leica site that you can get the new shutter, bright-line viewfinder frames and hardened display fitted. I have other Leica equipment as well an extensive system of Canon kit too and I just need to reduce it down a bit.

I used my M6’s to shoot my Colombia book over a 5 year period, throughout I only ever used Fuji Neopan 400 whatever the lighting conditions. That is quite a grainy, contrasty film and I chose it for those properties and a certain look. I had some 1600 which I ended up never needing for that project and when I have used it on other occasions I have found the grain a bit over the top. Likewise the M8 is fine at 320 but gets a bit out of hand at the higher ASA’s, currently at least but it sounds as though the new firmware may be well on the way to resolving those issue’s. I have this body with me here in Afghanistan at present and I have the option to either send it back to Europe in the next few days if someone there is interested or take it with me to Bangkok in a week or two if there are any interested parties there. Let me know. Thanks, JPH.

You could download the new firmware 2.002 in the mean time and install it already.

Have just done that, it certainly is an improvement, 1250 is now very usable, 2500 still a bit noisy but its getting there. JPH

Today is the last opportunity I have to send the M8 back to Europe from Afghanistan so if there is any interest out there please let me know otherwise I will take it with me to Bangkok. The 21mm and finder have both sold. Cheers, JPH
