With the U.S. and U.K. closing their embassies, and the Libyan government abandoning Tripoli, does anyone know what the situation is there for photojournalists now? Is anyone working in Tripoli, or in the country generally?

Hi Doug,

I just got out of Libya a couple of weeks ago after living there around six years or so. In western Libya I would guess it’s been at least a few months since any western journalists were there, and I’m fairly certain there have been none at all in eastern Libya (where I was based) since the end of 2012. Libya is a very dangerous place for foreigners to be right now, make no mistake, and if anyone tries to tell you otherwise, don’t listen to them. The main dangers are either A. being held on suspicion of being a “spy” B. being kidnapped for financial gain or C. being kidnapped by extremists. In western Libya the main dangers would be A or B, in the east you can take your pick between all 3.

Now having said that there actually are a couple of safe spots in eastern Libya – namely al-Bayda and Tobruk – which are fairly secure. Getting in and out is fairly straightforward (both cities have airports, although the choice of destinations is limited and you definitely want to make sure you have a roundtrip ticket), but firstly there is still a risk of possibility A (although I do find the paranoia ridiculous, the fact is, it’s a war zone, there haven’t been any foreigners there in a while, and any outsiders who do happen to be there are bound to raise questions about what they’re doing there) and secondly as a photojournalist I doubt there would anything interesting for you to cover. The only reason anyone would want to go there is because that’s where the Constitutional Committee and the House of Representatives (respectively) are based. Hope this helps, and if you need any more info feel free to get in touch.

Best regards,
