What would be interesting to know is what’s the actual benefits that the above members have gained from Tweeting….

Currently I am sitting on the fence for this. From one hand, even News agencies have started feeding on this service, like in the ongoing stream that’s coming from Iran. And from the other hand most of the visual and content that I have seen so far would be classified in my eyes as visual spam…

by Ethan Knight | 24 Jun 2009 22:06 | Christchurch, New Zealand | | Report spam→
You don’t have to make a judgement about it – it’s just something that’s happening. There’s no fence to sit on. If you don’t like it, don’t get involved.

There’s two kinds of Twitter posters – those who give a rundown of what they had for breakfast and those who go for quality over quantity. If you want to hold an audience, then have multiple twitter accounts. I have one personal one for friends, one for my blather.net website and one for my photo business. I use a tool called Twirl (www.twirl.com) to login to all three. I can do my blah blah silly stuff on the personal one, but I put out no more than 3-5 tweets a week on my photography one, depending on what I’ve been got to announce. That way I can ensure that the content is relevant, and not causing a torrent that will force people to ‘unfollow’ me.

BTW, I’m writing this from a ship in Baffin Bay, west of Greenland. I’ve been experimenting with a service called Posterous (www.posterous.com) that I highly recommend. I’ll soon only be able to access email via a glorified sat phone, but I’ve found a way of sending an email that will get published to a blog, posted to Facebook and trimmed down to a Twitter feed – all in one go. Check it out!

The “Twitter is email for people with attention defecit disorder” or “people who have no friends” remarks are often repeated, and at times funny enough. However, to return the remark, I’d say those are said by people without imagination. Twitter, as well as other social networks (including this one) have some really strong benefits if only you use it right. It’s all just tools, and none of it is revolutionary, BUT I believe they’ve proved amazing as organizational and news-disseminating tools, and in many cases they work faster than most news sites and even Google.

You control whose feeds (or tweets) you want to follow, so just don’t follow the personal I’m-having-yogurt-for-breakfast-feeds. A great many human rights sites twitter. I personally use twitter only for spreading what I consider important news, links and articles out there. I use facebook for the same, and my blog has a field where my recent tweets show up, as well as my recent bookmarks on Delicious (an online bookmarking service), so that the articles and news that I find important and enlightening are accessible.

Oops. This surely wouldn’t fit into a tweet. that would be:

Yes, I have been using Twitter since March ’07 and found there are “Three Phases of Twitter”:

It begins with a short initial spark of interest and geeky intrigue, which leads into a long period of finding it stupid, pointless, worthless and annoying before a sudden realization of its limitless potential resulting in complete addiction.

It depends on how you approach Twitter. It can be used effectively depending on your objective.

I blog on my website. I try to provide information about my shooting style, my shooting objectives, my workflow and personal observations about different equipment I use. I try to stay conversational and minimize the technical jargon. My goal is to have others help spread word about me, my work and the services I can provide potential clients.

With that in mind, I make a habit of “tweeting” about current information available on my site… with a link to that information. I religiously include (#) hash tags and keywords to aid in the search of this information. I’ll tweet a link to a “Photo of the Day”… I’ll talk about tips for taking better family photos… vacation, holidays, kids etc. Not that I shoot those things professionally, but I feel there are general tips that even those using a simple point’ n shoot can benefit from.

The end result? In less than 90 days I was able to quadruple the number of pages views and traffic to my web site. And that’s with only 325 “followers” on Twitter to-date.

Like anything else in marketing, it’s how you use the tools you have.

I should have, I have also garnered valuable information for my own use by following suggestions and links from others, too. So it is a two way street… though I am extremely selective in who I “follow.”

I do worry how long before the bubble bursts, though.

Twitter simultaneously allows for asymmetrical following and conversation in a collective space, which is why I use it. I keep up with creatives and academics doing work I’m interested in, knowing they have no need to follow me back. I can see conversations unfold over time in an amorphous repository. It’s like a less linear, more open from of a message board. Though I love message boards too, even more than facebook. It would bore myself to death if twitter were only for promotion purposes. Though there’s a lot of that going around.

It took me a while to figure out why i should use Twitter, but here is what i found out:
- it helps me stay informed – not only about the political scene, but about evens, projects, opportunities and many more
- i get inspired and learn from others – there are way too many people, things and events that help you generate many ideas/day for new projects
- there definitely are ways of creating opportunities – there are small chances that a new twitter friend would offer you, just like that, an assignment. But usually about 1 of 15 followers will really be interested in knowing you better and see more of your work. You just need to extend those relations outside the twitter-sphere.
And nevertheless, there is that good feeling when people from the other end of the world discover you through twitter, get to love your work, and tweet about it to their own followers.

how forlorn and obsessed we’ve become with the ‘need’ to be heard or the need to not be left out, we’ve been dimed and it’s so unfortunate….and that aint about being a luddite (which i am not), but it amazes me that we chatter more and more and sustain less and less…

isn’t it odd that ‘asymmetrical following and conversation’ doesnt dismay more folk….is a ‘conversation’ still a conversation if it’s ‘asymmetric’….

we’re afraid to be alone and afraid to be left behind and afraid we wont be loved enough or know enough or on top of the game enough….

we’ve become a troop of twitterdumbs and tweeterdees….

This thread is so long now, I tried to find my earlier entry to edit it, and failed. Tired eyes…

http://twitter.com/blueperez

I tweet no drivel, only photography and photographer related links and such like. Relevant stuff. The occasional web design related link in there too.

I also network on Facebook, specifically with photographers, so drop by and add me as your friend if you’re on there. My tweets go on Facebook some of the time too.

Hey Blue and David-thanks for connecting on Twitter :-)
I’m John Watts-Robertson on Facebook and like lots of people the tweets tend to be the same as the Facebook updates or rather more succinct due to the Twitter word limit.
Apologies in advance for the non-photography drivel !

Hey everyone… don’t know if you’ve heard, but Twitter and facebook are both continue to be blocked by the Chinese government. I’m even having trouble accessing some of the services through my usual myriad of proxy clients.

Sometimes I love being in China, and sometimes I really hate it here.

Anyway, at least Lightstalkers has avoided the GFW… for now.

http://twitter.com/darraghf Its a good thing to tag your tweets to reach the photographers on the twitter #photo #photog. But beware that certain keywords can get you odd followers… I tweeted making a comment about ‘The honeymoon is over’ and ended up getting followed by weddings.com and other such tweeters lol. Given that twitter is a public service and is available to any:

1) who cares if the CIA or IRS are reading it, so is anyone else who cares
2) why do you think that the CIA and/or IRS give a rat’s ass about what a bunch of photogs, journalists, and for that matter, general people around the world have to blather on about? Have you read twitter updates? “My bellybutton lint is blue today” is about at confidential as they get!

Why am I feeding the troll? Because I’ve had my fill of morons today.

by Rick Yazwinski | 16 Dec 2009 00:12 | 50 Coolmine Rd, Toronto, On, Canada | | Report spam→
Simply put: if you’re putting things on Twitter that you wouldn’t want the world to read, then stop. If you have some bizarre opinion that twitter is private, you’re kidding yourself – it’s a microblogging service.

Paranoia about big brother, is silly. If you think that if spooks want to follow you that the most invasive they’d be would be twitter, you’re kidding yourself.

But again, I think that big brother has more important things to do than watch your twitter feed.

Oh, and btw, I’m sure that all readers of this thread know who the asshole is (hint: not me).
