List of Recommended Fixers in Africa

As we are all putting up posts looking for fixers all the time, so I thought I would just start a list that anyone can add to, this list is for Africa as that is where I am looking for contacts.

add a fixer that you have worked with and would recommend bellow……

Thanks Greg

Raymond Kolubah Zarbay Jr is one of the best fixers I have ever worked with. He is very knowledgeable, and an experienced journalist with a great network of contacts. He will keep you safe and he also has his own car.

He has been a radio and newspaper journalist for years and is relatively well known in Liberia. Most recently he has been working for the UN radio station in Monrovia and been doing journalism training course on behalf of Amnesty International as well as working as a fixer.

Raymond is a very nice guy too, easy to work with and good fun to be around.

Hi Nancy and Greg,
I’m looking for a volunteer position in a media organization or agency in another African country. I’m from Nigeria.
I’ve worked with several publications round the world especially for Tmes Publications, London as correspondent in the UN in Geneva, Switzerland from 2000 to 2007. I’m presently an Engish language teacher in Trabzon, Trkey and want to get back into reporting and ‘breaking’ news; writing reviews, articles, taking photos.
My best regards.

Hi Greg,
I think the fixer list is a great idea. i have just return from an assignment in Djibouti and have some bad experience with a fixer, well whatever he may be. So I would recommend you also include in your list fixers that should be avoided such as the one I had to deal with. So if anyone goes to Djibouti I definitely warn to stay away from Daniel Jean who also run a sort of travel agency called Bamboo Travel. Although he is knowledgeable of the country he actually rip people off. He charges unreasonable fee and he is never clear about logistic as to confuse you with how much he is going to charge you later. Basically he is a lier. He even try to charge me for services he has never done for me.
I have been in this job for almost 20 years and never actually bumped in a “fixer” like this before.
Let me know if you need to know more.

Boully Galissa

Fixer, translater, french teacher, tourist guide.
email: galissa2000(a)yahoo.fr / mobile: 00221 775088293 Skype / diereba
website http://galissa.blogspot.com/

I would like to recommend using Boully Galissa because he is hard working, reliable, honorable and a very good at what he dos. In fact, he is the best fixer I have ever used. He has a way with people that is quite unique.

During the time that Boully and I worked together we often found ourselves in sensitive and difficult situations, and his ability to read people, inspire respect, trust and humor, made my work efficient and pleasurable and allowed me a contact with people that I could never have achieved without him.

I worked with Masimba Sasa and Mzu Nhlabati in Johannesburg last year. These two guys are quite amazing, both in terms of research and assisting but also on a social level.
I highly recommend both of them, Masimba can be found here on LS.

For those self recommending themselves, might I suggest you get a previous satisfied client to do it for you? Getting a third party vouch is worth far more than advertising to be a “fixer” …

by 'kola | 18 Jun 2014 12:06 | New York, United States | | Report spam→
This is an excellent topic (agreed that either a satisfied client should post it or be prepared to give a list of references).

However, postings to listserves inevitable slip off the page as others post other topics. So someone might want to go to Facebook and start a group for fixers, maybe starting with an Africa Fixer Group and allow people to post. The fixer groups can be created by region as needed. Obviously don’t make it secret.

To all fixers and producers, there is a new global resource called World Fixer (www.worldfixer.com) which has been set up to provide registered fixers worldwide. It is still in the beta stage but worth checking out.

by Helen Atty | 07 Jul 2014 09:07 | Cape Town, South Africa | | Report spam→
Helen’s resource is a great idea, BUT I could not determine how to search fixers. If there is a tool to do this, it should be more obvious AND there should be way to rate fixers. I’ve had great ones and I’ve had horrible ones. AND the escrow account is totally unnecessary and actually an insult. I have never heard of a fixer getting stiffed. My guess is that this is where you intend to make your money. Why don’t you charge a “per use fee” instead?

by Richard Lord | 07 Jul 2014 11:07 | Nairobi and Kisumu, Kenya | | Report spam→
I’m not actually aligned with World Fixer, I just wrote an article for their blog. I will forward their comments to them, as I said, it’s in the beta stage so I am sure they will appreciate the feedback.

Excellent and reliable fixer for Ghana and Togo.

I have worked with him twice. The first one two years ago all over the northern region of Togo (Kara, Tamberma Valley, Sokode…). The second one, this summer in Accra (he had good contacts at Agbogbloshie dumpsite and speaks English, French and local languages). Both times, a very reliable, available and honest person. Highly recommended.

His contact information.
