581 Photographs from China: The Cultural Revolution to the Present Liu Heung Shing presents a visual history of China in his new edited volume, China: Portrait of a Country. The images—from Party authorized photographs to those of a more open China under Deng Xiaoping—reveal the events and experiences that have shaped China since 1949. Liu, a Pulitzer Prize-winning photojournalist and editor, was Time’s first Beijing-based photographer where he extensively covered the end of the Cultural Revolution and the death of Mao Zedong. In China: Portrait of a Country, Liu draws from the work of 88 Chinese photographers, piecing together a cohesive picture of China’s modern history from these myriad perspectives.
