Looking for critiques...
|
At this point in my career I’m largely isolated in my work. I spend a couple weeks in the field shooting, edit everything on scene and then move on to the next project.
I was wondering if anyone knew of a good place or community to get critiques. Or if anyone wants to go through a dropbox set once a month or so? I really need to grow and I’m struggling to do so on my own.
I have a degree in photojournalism and worked for a newspaper in the States for two years. Now doing freelance and contract work for NGO’s all over Africa.
Thanks for the consideration.

I admire your honesty and courage. Damn nice shooting too. Invest $100, join NPPA; they have a mentoring and critique program. Send me an e mail too.. JR

Hey C,
Try David Wells website:
http://thewellspoint.com/
He has a critique website along with it—-he will critique your work or you can select from a group of reviewers he lists:

Good luck,

Christena – good suggestions above. You have a good eye – I can see that from the twelve pictures you have posted on LS. You might want to add some photographs to your LS page just so anybody looking at you has a better idea of your photography. You might consider having 30 or so pictures posted. I know that the LS portfolio isn’t what you’re talking about getting critiqued BTW. Good luck with your career.

Thanks so much guys! John will get at you soon. I don’t really work in the States anymore so I don’t think I can be apart of NPPA. My membership ended this Feb.
David, will check it out. And get back to you. Thanks for the heads up.
And John for sure will work on that. I haven’t updated with any new stuff recently.
Cheers!

Hey Christena – if you’re so inclined you can join NPPA as an international member. It’s a good way to stay connected. Again, best of luck.

Critique? Thats easy.
Drop the Type-logo and the word “Nomad” on your home page, these are distractions.
Don’t start a page with body text, start with a photo, place text under the photo.
I think your videos are better then your images. The images have no story. But that doesnt mean the images are bad, they are good but lack cohesion. Just my thought.
Hope that helps!
Cheers Tom

How did I not know NPPA had international memberships!? Thanks John. Do you know if they do the contests internationally too? I’m trying to find more to enter in. I guess that’s one perk of newspaper in that other people enter for you. haha.

Christena,
When you join the NPPA, your location determines your “Region” and there are 11 Regions (?)——So I am in R-10 which includes California and also Vietnam as well as a ton of other countries—-there is a list of what is in each Region.——Each region has a chair and vice-chairs as well as its own website—-
All the Regions have monthly clip contests where you enter published work by category (general news, sports, features, illustration) where you are judged by different and separate newsrooms across the US, earning points for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd as well as 1 point for entering, the accumulated points rank you as POY at the end of that calendar year for that region—-it’s all included in the membership, and besides there are all types of grants, mentoring, critiques, and advocacy that fight for photographers rights——.
