Hi, Shinji here, with an update on our recent adventures at Lightstalkers.org. As you know, we moved to a new platform a couple weeks ago, with all new source code. Since, I’ve found and fixed tons of bugs with your help, thank you very much for that. (There are still, of course, some bugs outstanding, but overall we seem to be right on track.)
Although our new platform is quite efficient, Lightstalkers is still a bit of a beast. We now have faster pageloads, but the total CPU footprint is ginormous. As a result, we’re seeing occasional ‘stalls’. Today in particular, we were temporarily disabled by the host, which caused extremely unsightly error messages. Sorry about that.
So, of course, we’re working hard on this. Many of you have volunteered to donate funds to help cover the costs of running all this, which is very generous. Don’t worry — we’re going to take you up on it eventually. We have a black tower full of lawyers working on the paperwork.
In the meantime, there are two ways you can help.
If you are an experienced Ruby on Rails developer, you can help us optimize the code. If you are an ISP, you can help us get set up on a dedicated server. (A modest one is fine — it’s only a shared CPU problem.)
And ideas are always welcome. You can contact me at firstname.lastname@example.org directly. I try to respond to everyone, but it’s not always possible. Thanks again
