megabyte usage when skyping/phoning on the internet?

I want to make phone calls over the internet, but I have to pay for megabyte usage. Does anyone know how many magabytes a minute Skyping or phoning takes? I pay 14 cents a megabyte (with a Cambodian service provider), which is cool for images, but I have no idea what phoning costs, and I don’t want to wait until the first internet usage bill arrives. thanks, Rita.

It al depens on the codec used. With today’s VOIP technology you might be using between 8 to 10 kbps. That will be between 0.4 to 0.6 megabytes a min. The worst case scenario 64 kbps ! But that is rare.

Rita ,there was a thread about it a while ago

You can install MenuMeters and set it to display network activity- that will get you a dropdown menu telling you exactly how many bytes are going in and out. Gio and I did a pretty non-scientific test, and came up with about 6mb for 20 minutes, but you might want to be more scientific about it ;)

Hope all well out there.
