Need Help in developing a protective equipments for Journalists
|
Hi all,
My name is Yudhi Hartono and I am a fourth year Industrial design student in University of New South Wales. Currently I am working on my final project where I have to propose a fully resolved product for a market of my choice. At the end of the project, I have to have a product concept that is ready for production. I decided to do a project on protective equipments for journalists who work in conflict zones. I chose this area because I have an interest in this area. I am a photographer as well and I used to have a dream of being a photojournalist. I also have a deep admiration to them as they risk their own safety to tell the rest of the world about a suffering that often is ignored.
Anyway, I am just wondering if anyone in this forum works as a journalist? I need have a chat with people from the profession to get an insight of what they think the current problems are and what they really need.
Any help will be appreciated.
Thank you,
Yudhi Hartono

Yudhi,
I’d look into Miguel Caballero, http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/southamerica/colombia/2403619/Miguel-Caballero-the-Armani-of-armour.html (from the Times of London). Obama is said to have worn their clothing during the inauguration. Keep Lightstalkers updated, there are a lot of people on here that would prefer something discrete when dealing with less-than-friendly border guards.

Hi Chris,
Thanks a lot for the reply.
May I know what you mean by keep lightstalkers updated? I am fairly new to this forum, so I am still working my way around as the format is quite different.
Many thanks

Yudhi,
I just mean post updates as you think their necessary. There are many members who have worked in every conceivable situation and can offer great feedback on usefulness and potential issue in the clothing every step of the way and for every circumstance. Cheers

You might find this (getting rather old now) post useful for links to companies selling such gear:

Dear all,
I have a question with the ideas of mobile camera drones that you can control from a distant. As a journalist, do any of you like the idea of being taken apart from your camera, and instead you will be taking picture from a distant, away from where the action takes place?… Or do you believe that it is necessary to be right where the actual story is happening, so that you can produce a better picture?
And also, may I know what are all the preparation you made before you depart on assignments in areas where are regarded as dangerous? Does the organizations that you work for specify any set of steps that need to be taken before you depart?
I’d like to say beforehand; many thanks for any answers.

Hi all,
Thank you so much for the inputs. It really helped me out a lot. However as a lot of you have pointed out, developing a bullet resistant equipments such as vest, helmet etc will get really difficult. The contractors have spent million dollars in developing those equipment. A lot of other journalists that I talked to also said that it’s hard to come up with a more innovative protective equipment than what is already available. And also there is the issue with the product testing to make sure my design will work. I do not think I will have any access to shoot a gun to my prototype. lol…
My supervisor has directed me to pull back a bit and instead of focusing on bullet proof vests etc, maybe I should start considering the other area of Journalist’s life such as; health (preventing from disease, how they store food etc) and their equipment (how it’s handled or protected).
Anyway, yea that’s my current progress at the moment.
Regards,
Yudhi
