New death threats against from the Guatemalan Forensic Anthropology Foundation
We are writing to ask for your help once more in requesting a full investigation into new death threats against our colleagues from the Guatemalan Forensic Anthropology Foundation (FAFG). In particular, we ask for security measures to be increased for those specifically targeted in the threats including the foundation’s executive director, Fredy Peccerelli, his brother-in-law, Omar Giron Bertoni, who also works for the Guatemalan foundation, and other family members.
The most recent threats occurred in early January 2006. The first threat was sent on January 9th in the form of a text message to Fredy’s cell phone. The text message reads "sons of bitches, we will break your brother, yani’s a** we are in control of the situation…he drives a Volvo with a missing window.stop the exhumations."
On January 10th, a second threat came as an anonymous hand-written letter sent to the house of Omar and his wife, Bianka Peccerelli. The letter states, "Sons of bitches, you haven’t been scared enough. We are going to kill you. Fredi doesn’t understand. We are going to kidnap your sister and rape her many times over. If you don’t stop, we are going to send her back to you piece by piece. Omar will be a widower, but only for a few minutes because we are going to put a bullet in his head. One by one, we will kill you. Death to the anthropologists. Be prepared." Copies of these disturbing threats have been attached to this email.
Due to the urgency of this situation, Fredy and the team have asked the Protection and Safety Services (SEPROSE), the National Civil Police (PNC) and the Ministry of Interior to assign security to the following:
1. Permanent security at the residence of Fredy’s father, Gianni Paolo Peccerelli Monterroso
2. Personal security for Gianni Paolo Peccerelli Monterroso
3. Personal security for Omar Bertoni Girón de Léon
In addition to the threats, on December 29th, 2005, someone stole the pick-up truck belonging to the FAFG that Fredy uses. The vehicle was stolen from Mr. Jose Antonio Saavedra Ceballos, who was assigned as Fredy’s personal security guard. The vehicle was stolen under suspicious circumstances and it may be related to the death threats received weeks later. The foundation has sought help from SEPROSE and the Public Ministry to investigate these cases.
We are asking you to please send letters to the people listed below in support of the foundation and denouncing the threats against Fredy and his family in relation to the forensics and human rights work they conduct. Emails and letters, particularly on institutional letterhead and from outside of , are a great help. Attached are sample letters in English and in Spanish.
In the letter, Fredy asked us to request protection and security for the members of his family mentioned above in addition to all the Foundation’s members, as well as a full investigation into these incidents.
Thank you very much in advance for your collaboration.
