New Pictures

I like the photos but I don’t like your website. All those bloody tabs moving in and out. The thumbnails that cover the photo and how the caption only appears when you put your mouse over that little thing and then it covers the photo. I am a little uncertain about image 3 as it provides the same information as image 2 but not in a new way. I do like the b/w treatment and the interesting angles. Some of the people are chopped up a bit, I can’t decided if it a good or bad thing exactly.

(I am known as being very critical so take what I say with a grain of salt, except for the website stuff…)

I took this yesterday as part of an ongoing project I am doing on the lives / living conditions of bicycle messengers in Vancouver.

Thanks for the critique and don’t worry about being harsh or too critical. Its what I asked for. I understand where you are coming from as far as my composition and I did wonder about putting in those two similair pictures. I guess where I’m not quite seeing eye to eye with you is the website. I do understand where you are coming from but I like the fact that the pictures are big, the site is fast and relatively intuitive and looks pretty sleek. Not a big fan of flash? or is it that the site design seems flawed? I have never really had anyone complain about the tabs or the way the captions work. Usually they tend to talk to me more about my photos ( why, sequence, etc.) and usually like the site. Its good to hear the other side of that though.

Anyone else have any ideas, comments, or critiques about my work or site? Thanks.

P.S. – I don’t know much about bike messengers or their living conditions but it seems like a fascinating topic. Great photo by the way.

I am not huge on flash no (though I do use a little), I think its distracting to have things moving about. I agree its nice to have photos as large as possible, I assume its designed for a 1024×768 screen?

No issue with sequence, it seems to be the linear progression of the day and makes sense.

To view the captions you have to keep moving between the next button and the caption thing or do a slide show and you might have enough time to read them if you leave the mouse over the ‘title info’ but the white/grey is hard and the font is pretty small.

Anyway, this is probably all just me compensating for my own site having so little caption information.

Bike messengers are a strange group of people, there have been many snapshots of them looking “cool” but no one that I know of has shown the grittier less amusing part of being a messenger or the bike culture lifestyles that many of them live.

I started working on this idea about two weeks ago and am still uncertain in what exact direction I will take it.
