Noorderlicht Last Call

hi all, just got this email -

Noorderlicht 2006 Photofestival:
Photography from South and Southeast Asia
Last call for submissions

This is a message to remind everyone that the official deadline for open
submissions to the Noorderlicht 2006 Photofestival is due very soon.

The research for the festival is progressing nicely, but we are still
searching for good work to consider for the programming.

The following countries are included in the upcoming festival: Pakistan,
Nepal, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Myanmar (former Burma), Thailand,
Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, Papua New Guinea, East Timor, Malaysia, Singapore,
Brunei, Maldives and the Philippines.

Have you photographed in this region, do you know photographers whose work
we should see, do you have other suggestions? Please don¹t hesitate to get
in touch with us.

Especially ideas from/about photographers from those countries themselves
are invited.

Noorderlicht 2006 is a large international photofestival, introducing
photography from a different part of the world to a new audience.
Noorderlicht is known for its combination of high quality photography and
telling compelling stories about the world we live in.
The festival takes place in the Netherlands in September this year and will
be accompanied by a luxurious catalogue.

For general information on Noorderlicht 2006, see:

For submission guidelines, see:

http://www.noorderlicht.com/eng/info/pandora.html

Submissions, ideas and questions can be sent directly to curator Wim Melis:

wim@noorderlicht.com

The exhibitions will be made available for touring afterwards. The previous
non-western festival, NAZAR on the Arab countries, travelled all over the
world. Are you an organiser interested in hosting an exhibition? Please let
us know in time.

This last call neglects to include India and Indonesia in its list of countries, though they are in fact part of the festival’s theme this year:

"Our focus is not on economic superpowers presently on the world stage (Japan, China), or the remnants of the former Soviet Union, or the countries that the United States terms the ‘Axis of Evil’ (Iran, North Korea and – sometimes, and sometimes not – Afghanistan), but on the ‘other’ Asia. That Asia runs roughly from Pakistan to Indonesia, and is in many ways exemplary for the turbulent conflict between tradition and Western modernization, in part fed by economic globalization, that characterizes our times. India and Indonesia, the two largest countries in the region which to an increasing degree are making their weight felt on the global stage, will have a strong presence. We are also seeking photography from adjoining and intervening countries: Pakistan, Nepal, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Myanmar (former Burma), Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Singapore, Vietnam, Papua New Guinea, East Timor, Malaysia, Brunei, Maldives and the Philippines."  (Noorderlicht website)

I have to add that Noorderlicht is a wonderful festival; from a personal experience they have included some of my work in their exhibitions and books twice in the past years: the quality of their editing and the professionalism of the team on this occasion was truly world class. Highly recommended and commended!!

That is true actually, they run a tight but very amicable ship, and Wim is very approachable and attentive — a marvel really when you consider the amount of work that goes into a thing like this.
