Ode Magazine (US) - my advice, avoid!
|
I was contacted by the creative director of ODE magazine ( based in California), Eric Siry, in December last year to photograph the environmentalist Nick Rosen for them, here in the UK. The rate was low but I was free, so why not? Big mistake.
Though they used the work both in print and online and emailed to say they liked the images – my invoice is still unpaid. Indeed they no longer respond to any of my emails.
In eighteen years I have had some late payers but never a non-payer like these guys – been lucky maybe. Legal action from the UK seems too expensive to attempt given the amount due – so here’s my warning avoid!!!! You will not be dealing with honest professionals!

Try to found some lightstalker that live in California that can make a local call to ask why they are delaying so the payment. Good luck.

I would be interested to know how this turns out. I was about to pitch them a story. Thanks!

Will update but frankly not likely to be any movement.
It won’t get payment for me but if photographers like yourself made it clear that they would not be pitching stories to their publication because of such a scenario – as I can’t be the only one – then publishers like this may finally understand that they need to keep freelance photographers/writers happy if they are to generate interesting content.

Everybody…
Forget playing Mr Nice Guy!
I think its time to start sending scary looking people around to wait in the foyers of editorial staff until the bills are paid…

YES! Avoid! They suck. They were like four months late in paying for images licensed from my archives. They finally paid but I’m still waiting for them to pay the late fee invoices. I’m not holding my breath.

Wow,this is bad for photog.

The last magazine I shot for paid me 8 months later. Editorial photography is just getting worse, (financially) unless you are shooting for conde nast.
