Utilize technical, editorial and logistical problem solving skills to independently make decisions with regard to shot selection, video editing, feed transmission/coordination, and combination of video and audio tracks. Conceptualize with reporters and producers to understand and fine tune scope of news stories. Produce packages and voice-over using non-linear editing (NLE) and Final Cut Pro. May be requested to work in hostile environments, such as war zones, to cover news stories, as needed. Extensive travel required. Provide leadership, training, and mentoring to junior level photojournalists, editors, and crew members. Utilize still photography to capture newsworthy events. Provide professional guidance to photojournalists and crew members to ensure all pictures and sound are of the highest quality. Perform all assigned responsibilities independently and without direction. Must be on call 24/7 to respond to news demands in domestic and international locations.

Photographers must have the ability to make engaging images of a wide variety of subjects including news, sports, feature and portraits. He or she must be able to understand the story as presented on a photo assignment and produce pictures that illuminate the subject matter.

While on assignment the photographer must be able to gather information about the event and the people photographed, and then accurately convey this information along with the photographs when they are submitted for publication. He or she must be able to relate to a wide range of people while on assignment and be a good representative for the company.

The photographer must be a master of the technical aspects of digital photography including camera function and artificial lighting.

Photographers must have a thorough working knowledge of Adobe Photoshop and Photo Mechanic. He or she must be well versed in toning images for newspaper reproduction and able to work quickly and accurately under pressure while on deadline. Experience with video will be a plus, although still photography is the primary duty of this position.

A staff photographer must be able to carry 30 pounds for an extended period in all kinds of weather conditions including extreme heat, cold, rain, snow or icy conditions. He or she must be able to walk long distances with this equipment to reach the scene of a news event, in some cases over fences or through thick underbrush. The photographer must be able to move quickly to avoid being hit while on the sidelines at sporting events. He or she must also be able to climb into the cockpit of a small airplane or helicopter if an assignment calls for aerial photographs.

Finally, photographers must be prepared for anything and have the ability to respond quickly when breaking news happens.
