Photo-voice project in Palestine

Looking to build on efforts – or start a new project – to empower Palestinian refugee children with cameras and bring their “voices” to specific forums and audiences (e.g. policy, peace-building missions). Looking for guidance and partners. Please contact me if you might provide either.

Try the Norwegian People Aid’s Youth & Vocational Center in Beirut. Lots of palestinian refugees who use the center, all interested in photography and media.

I’d try to contact filmmaker Mai Masri, who has made a series of three films on Palestinian children and has also set up a Children’s Scholarship fund.

- If someone wanted to learn more or do something to help, what might you suggest?

They could visit NGOs on the ground like Ibdaa in Dheisha or Sumoud in Shatila camp. They could sponsor Palestinian children or families. If they like they could volunteer to work with children in one of the refugee camps or take part in the International Solidarity Movement (ISM) www.palsolidarity.org or Grass Roots International Protection (GIPP) www.pngo.net/GIPP/.

Peace activists of ISM are doing incredible work in protecting civilians and testifying against Israeli brutality (Contacts: Pcr@p-ol.com and send copy to: georgesq@yahoo.com Hanna Rishmawi (GIPP): 00972-52-437513; Bahiyya (GIPP): 00972-55-378262; George S. Rishmawi: 00972-52-502079; Ghassan Andoni: 00972-52- 595319; Sabeel Centre (Cathy): 00972-2-5327136).

Check this site out! The exhibition was traveling through America not too long ago. . . so inspiring! The photographer who headed this project might be able to give you some insight on the “how’s” in getting a project like this off the ground. Cheers!

I have a long term relationship with the community in Dheisheh refugee camp, near Bethlehem. I can put you in touch with the folks who run the Ibdaa Cultural Center – it has an infrastructure to support internationals and welcomes such projects. I did a pilot photo workshop there last fall, and they’d definitely like to bring more photography projects in.

hi ruba,

i’m from india and was wondering if there are spaces/ projects that allow for photographers and filmmakers like us to operate and work in palestine? i’m really keen to take up a visual project that looks at how childhood is lived and ‘performed’ in the middle east, specifically in conflict areas…would you be able to help?

looking forward to hearing from you

Dear Ruba, In France, with vulnerable (dsabled, marginalised…) publics , we have developped method, starting from using either disposable cameras or even mobile phone camera and going till editing movies from those images + voices + any sounds…tell me a bit what you need exactly. All the best . gerald
