photographer Anton Hammerl missing in Libya
|
“Photojournalists Anton Hammerl and Manuel Varela de Seijas Brabo went missing on 05 April, alongside journalists Clare Morgana Gillis and James Wright Foley, while covering the Libyan conflict.
According to colleagues, the group of four was “caught in the rapid-fire advance and retreat that has characterized the Libyan conflict thus far.” But, while the families of Gillis, Foley and Brabo have received news of their conditions, the whereabouts of Hammerl remain unknown to this day."

Four journalists — including the Atlantic and USA Today freelance reporter Clare Morgana Gillis — captured and detained in Libya early last month were released by the Libyan government on Wednesday.
Gillis, James Foley, an American reporter for the GlobalPost, Spanish photographer Manuel Brabo and British freelance reporter Nigel Chandler were also released, the Atlantic said.
The journalists were released to a hotel in Tripoli and are expected to be allowed to leave the country tomorrow. Gillis told the Associated Press that the Libyan government had charged them with illegally entering the country, but that that their sentence had been suspended, and that the four were doing fine.
The group had been held for two weeks in a coed military detention center in Tripoli — Gillis later to a women’s civilian prison — and, eventually, another facility,
The status of another journalist — freelance photographer Anton Lazarus Hammerl — remains unknown. Hammerl was also detained on April 5.

A statement on Facebook attributed to Mr. Hammerl’s family said they learned Thursday that he had in fact been killed April 5 by the forces of Col. Muammar el-Qaddafi.
Facebook:
At 10pm BST (11pm SA time) this evening we received devastating news regarding Anton Hammerl.
On 5 April 2011 Anton was shot by Gaddafi’s forces in an extremely remote location in the Libyan desert. According to eyewitnesses, his injuries were such that he could not have survived without medical attention.
Words are simply not enough to describe the unbelievable trauma the Hammerl family is going through.
From the moment Anton disappeared in Libya we have lived in hope as the Libyan officials assured us that they had Anton.
It is intolerably cruel that Gaddafi loyalists have known Anton’s fate all along and chose to cover it up.
Thank you so much for your love and support.
