Photographer at Firdos Square in 2003?
|
I’m trying to find the photographer who rode atop one of the first U.S. tanks into Baghdad’s Firdos Square on April 9, 2003. He was thin, had blond or peroxide-blond hair, was wearing a dark flak jacket with “TV” on its back. I think he was European, maybe Dutch, Scandinavian or German. I’ve posted a video grab of him on my blog—

If you know him, or if you are him, could you please contact me?
Thanks, Peter Maass

Peter – could be Chris Anderson, he was embedded with an armored column that hit Baghdad around that time. Hard to tell, but from the video stills, the photographer looks relatively tall – Chris is about 5’6".

Hello Peter,
As I told Thorn who asked me on your behalf, I think,
It could be James Nachtwey (hair white, not peroxyded…), who was definitely walking with me along that armored column a mile or so before it reached Firdous sq. It is entirely possible that he would have climbed on a vehicle for while to shoot ‘the reverse’ angle. He was wearing his usual white shirt that day, but I can’t remember if he had a flak jacket on. Jim was among the small group of foreign photographers (Carolyn Cole, Jerome Delay, Patrick Baz, Yuri Kozyrev, Steve Connors, me and a few others…) who managed to be inside Bagdad during the entire 3 weeks war. But A LOT of photogs embedded or not arrived in Baghdad that day…so if it is one of them on the video, it could be one of several hundreds…)

Teru, Matthias and Bruno, many thanks for responding. I have indeed found him, not long after posting this query. I haven’t talked to him on the phone yet, have just exchanged email with him, so probably shouldn’t broadcast it until I know he’s copacetic with me doing so, which I’m sure he will be. Give me a shout in a few days and I’ll be able to let you know. It’s not Chris A. or Jim N. or any of the others mentioned. Bests, Peter
