Photography in support of indigenous peoples

For many years now, I have been working in Mexico to document indigenous cultural, land and environmental struggles in Mexico. I really wanted to ask LS members to consider signing this petition because I am personally insulted when luxury hotels dump their sewage into the Copper Canyon, affecting Rarámuri springs and making the original inhabitants sick. I was most moved by the Rarámuris reaction: of course they are angry, but it seemed to me that they were hurt more than anything else, as if to say: “How can people treat us with such utter disregard and disdain?” Anyway, I have posted the link for the petition and will repeat it here. This is one way I use my camera to work for change, they´re not Pulitzer photos, but they have helped move things forward, as can you with your signature. The government and hotel owners have ignored demands for 17 years, saying they will clean it up, then doing nothing. One boy had to make 6 visits to a hospital 5 hours away by bus to heal the rashes he got by bathing in the stream, deep in the canyon, far from the hotel. You get the idea. Here´s the link, and thank you for reading this.

Have you given any thought to blogging about this too?

Rather than implying we have to do more research to find out about the problem, it would be useful to this cause to have a easier point of information to access about it.

If the problem has been ongoing for some time I expect you and others have managed to generate some record of it.

The US generates a lot of tourism in the Copper Canyon. In addition to the petition do you think there is a way to generate a letter writing campaign in which these tourists and others could participate through AVAAZ or a similar organization?
