photojournalists photographing weddings

Seeing a need for a space online for photojournalists who also photograph weddings, I created http://www.newsweddingphotographers.com, an online directory of national photographers who have a background in photojournalism like myself. If you have at least two years editorial experience and photograph weddings, or are looking to expand your income, take a peek and submit your application.

There at least two other associations that already do this: Wedding Photojournalist Association and Wedding Bureau.

WPJA allows shooters with a non-editorial background to join and Wedding Bureau books weddings for photographers. News Wedding Photographers is different from both of these.

Nothing wrong with a non-editorial background as long as the images are storytelling. In fact from what I’ve seen, photographers with an art background yet with the eye of a photojournalist can make just as compelling but more visually appealing pictures than straight-on newspaper shooters with a journalism background. Wedding Bureau is even better, all you have to do is shoot and they take care of the rest.

I was just looking to make an announcement about News Wedding Photographers that launched a year ago thinking some on here might be interested. I was not looking to start a discussion about what is the best group or opinions of what is right or wrong.

OK, I’ll just ask you point-blank. Your New Wedding Photographers group charges for membership, correct? If you’re going to go anywhere at all with this, you need to tell your prospective applicants just what it is you offer over the larger, more well-known (especially by brides) WPJA and WB. For example, those guys offer something really important in this industry – exposure by magazine ads and articles. What do you do better than they do, that gives me or anyone else a reason to pay yet another fee for membership at yet another site? I’m not trying to start a fight with you.

Those organizations are businesses and have been around for several years. News Wedding Photographers is still very young. There are no member-paying contests which determine your ranking and no forums associated with it on purpose. It is an elite directory, and nothing more. Your registration fee buys you into this select group. It is meant to be a simple referral network for editorial shooters who now photograph weddings and see the value in having a selective group to refer brides. I feel very confident and comfortable sharing the site with brides for dates that I am booked knowing each one of those photographers has a similar background and photographs weddings in that style. It is currently undergoing a redesign and as its membership grows (I was invited to speak at the SSC in March about making extra money as a wedding photographer to a room of worried news photographers, a sign of the times), so too will its Google rankings. I have hired a publicist to start on spreading the word when the redesign is complete. I hope that helps clarify things for you. Thanks!
