Project funding

Hi all,
Firstly I’d like to say hi, first post on lightstalkers, great to be here.
Secondly, i was after some help.
Basically, is there an online directory or reliable source of websites that give project assistance grants and funding for stories? I’m in that typical freelance position where i am overflowing with ideas and possible proposals but the project involves travel and living costs etc etc. Basically shot on spec without a salary they require some funding, surprisingly.
So, does anybody happen to know the best organisations to approach for grants and fundings and anywhere in particular i can see a directory of such kind charitable people!
