Purple Hearts by Nina Berman

For those of you in the San Francisco area! Ciao Anna OPENING NIGHT: Oct. 6, 6-8 p.m. DATES: Oct. 7-16 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. COST: Free LOCATION: Gladstone Building ADDRESS: 461 9th St., Oakland, CA 94607 ONLINE: http://www.purpleheartsbook.com/ AlterNet is hosting a photo exhibit by Nina Berman, with photographs of wounded soldiers who have returned home from Iraq. The exhibit will run from October 7 15 at the Gladstone Building in Oakland and will be open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. The opening night reception will be held on October 6 from 6-8 p.m., and will include both Nina and Specialist Robert Acosta, who will discuss the photos and the war in Iraq. Nina’s book "Purple Hearts: Back from Iraq" will also be available for signing. The exhibit is a vivid reminder of the human cost of the war in Iraq, this exhibit confronts viewers with the harsh reality of war that isn’t accounted for in the death toll. The thousands of soldiers with war-related injuries, Nina says, "have lost arms, legs, eyes, ears, pieces of their brains. Some will spend the rest of their lives in wheelchairs. These soldiers - all volunteer warriors — have returned home to heal their wounds and consider life, forever scarred and changed." We would like to have other community organizations and advocacy groups cosponsor the event, and veterans, students and teachers are especially invited to attend.
