SOPA for Photographers

I’m interested to hear your thoughts as content creators, on SOPA. If it stops internet piracy, it’s got to be good, right?

this opinion piece isn’t specific to photographers, but a good overview on the concerns from Joi Ito and Ethan Zuckerman at the MIT Media Lab:

“Why we need to stop SOPA and PIPA

BignoseTW, I think that in your statement you are mixing problem, with solution.
Piracy is a problem.
SOPA (and PIPA) are proposed solutions that are not designed according to the internet culture and its benefits. Not all solutions are good for a problem!
The link that teru proposes, is very interesting! thanks!

Not only are not all solutions good for a problem, as Gabriela states, but not all intended solutions are really solutions. As mentioned in the article that Teru linked:
“Internet experts have observed that, beyond being dangerous to innovation, harmful to speech and potentially unconstitutional, SOPA and PIPA are unlikely to work. Countries that block access to prohibited websites by altering the domain name system – as Vietnam does in blocking access to Facebook – find that millions of users are able to circumvent this form of censorship.”

Techcrunch article, with links to Google’s anti-SOPA petition, which generated 4.5 million signatures in a single day.

ps. I think Bignose was being facetious.

OK, Bignose, own up to it! Are you indeed facetious? I have also heard that you are bilingual and multifaceted. The truth please!

I am almost always facetious. (He says, facetiously)
