"stop eviction" in spain

Jaime, 45 years old and a father of four, immigrated from Ecuador to Barcelona in search of opportunity. Unfortunately like many other immigrants to Spain, Jaime has been victimized by a foreclosure system that not only repossesses a debtor’s home but continues to charge the debtor interest on their now foreclosed home mortgage- unlike the foreclosure process in most countries. Thousands of individuals and families have been affected by the mortgage crisis that swept across the peninsula over the last couple of years. Much like in the United States, the impetus for economic growth and speculative profiteering led many potential mortgage clients to be sold bad loans. Loans, the banks knew their clients would never be able to pay off. In 2006 Jaime bought his home in a working-class suburb of the catalan capitol for 250,000 Euros. In 2009 the bubble popped and salaries were cut dramatically, or worse yet thousands of jobs were eliminated. Jaime lost his job in 2010 and subsequently the bank began the foreclosure process for his property. Cuts in the public sector have meant less government support and have left many families without any institutional support. Interest rates have skyrocketed and little action by the national government has lead to the foreclosure of thousands of residences. In response many communities have organized local and national campaigns to stop home evictions, and keep families in their homes. In Jaime’s case the action of few anti-foreclosure solidarity activists, and neighbors undoubtedly helped keep him and his family in their home for at least a couple more weeks.
