Support Edouard Elias, hostage in Syria

It’s been more two month and a half now that Edouard Elias (Haytham Pictures) and his colleague Didier François (Europe1) have been abducted in Syria. A couple of weeks before, we made an interview with Edouard that was meant to be the first episode of a series about Haytham photographers.

Since june though, this video represents a little bit more than that for Chewbahat, me and Laura Surroca. This is our contribution to a broader effort, a commitment to help Edouard – and of course Didier – to come back by raising awareness on the difficult conditions to be a war photographer.

Gerald, is there a version or translation of the petition in English? Unfortunately, my French is not very good at all and I would prefer to know what I am signing.

Here’s a quick translation I wipped up:

“We, members of the support committee, journalists, friends, citizens fond of freedom, call for the release of the 2 journalists that have disappeared in Syria since June the 6th 2013, Didier François, international reporter, and Edouard Elias, photographer. Special correspondents for Europe 1 (Ed French Radio), they were arrested while en route to Aleppo.

Praised for the professionalism, Didier and Edouard are engaged in one of the most noble missions: freedom of information. In Syria, they were reporting to tell the public the reality of the daily tragedy.

The support committee, presided by Florence Aubenas, Karen Lajon et Serge July, and Repoters without borders denounce this blatant infraction of the 1738 resolution of the UN’s security Council and of the 3rd Geneva convention.

In Syria, the number of kidnapped or missing journalists keeps on growing. For these hostages, we call for the largest mobilisation. Information is a right, for us, for them and for all the victims of the syrian conflict.

Because their freedom is also ours!"
