The basics of working in Egypt
|
Has anybody been working in Egypt recently? I am about to arrive and am wondering if there are any things I should be aware of if working freelance as a photo/video journalist? Any contacts for fixers, translators, etc would be appreciated if you have them. This is my virgin run so the more info the better please, the more obvious the better. Cheers.

I was there during the week of the first anniversary. It was quite calm by comparison to the events after the soccer match. I never had problems to shot pictures etc. If you go to Tahrir you will find foreigners and it is easy of course to start a conversation and hang around with them. On lightstalkers are some fixers from Cairo as well, maybe you could contact them too?
Be aware of the traffic and dont use black Taxis. Use the white ones.
Have a nice trip, enjoy it. Cairo is great!

Ole. You got any info about registering with SCAF or any other government body?
|
No i havent heard anything about that. For me it was quite easy to enter Egypt, cuz I have a german ID so i didnt need a passport at all. I just bought a visa for 15US$ at the airport and this is it. I entered Egypt also as a ‘tourist’ and for ‘other’ reasons. So in the end, no problems at all either at the airport or in the streets.

Kim – I responded on your other thread with info on how to get Egyptian accreditation.

Hi,
I saw another post asking about where to buy camera gear in Cairo. I’ve used Ali Khaled Ibrahem to buy lens and some other small items. Limited selection but nice guy. Shop is in an apartment on Adly Street. Full address 58 Adly St. Second floor apartment 19/B. Best contact is a guy called Yessir 0100 424 5256.
For repairs they suggested I go to Photo Labib, contact Eyzat on 012 6573586. Although I have never tried this service.
Any luck getting a press card from Maspero? It took me over a month but it has proved useful.

Stay away from the military as far as possible, i did not do that last year and got in serious trouble when covering the uprising and was caught by the military.

Thanks Laurence and Foad. Yes I have heard that Maspero is a bit of an ordeal and have also been told it is best to deal with when on the ground in Cairo? Been told the machine gun mounted out the front window is a little off putting as well as the still hanging picture of Mubarak over looking the room. Subtle!
Thanks Scout, info was good to get.
Cheers.
