Agence Vu photographer IAN TEH showing work from China’s Three Gorges Dam entitled “THE VANISHING: Altered Landscapes and Displaced Lives on the Yangtze River” at Jack Shainman Gallery 513 West 20th Street, NYC. Opening reception FRIDAY MARCH 18TH.
Ian Teh began his photo essay on Chinas Yangtze River in 1999 as millions of lives were to be irreversibly altered and one of the worlds most spectacular landscapes lost forever. The giant Three Gorges Dam project would submerge 13 cities, 400 towns and 1,300 villages under 39 billion cubic metres of water. The journey, which ended in the Spring of 2003 on the eve of the flooding, covers 700 kilometres, documenting the vanishing landscape and the daily lives of some of the 2 million people who will eventually lose their homes in return for an increase in energy supply and an end to the deadly floods that regularly threaten their lives.
