Traveling Thru Ecuador
|
I’ll be traveling around Ecuador this June and want to rent a car. Anyone have experience on driving their roads? Tips? Also, has anyone ridden the rails? Are the trains a viable means of transportation? Any help/advice will be greatly appreciated.

Best way to travel is by bus. They have a great network all over the country and pretty decent buses. The rates are, if I remember correctly, 1$ per hour of bus ride. So for a 6 hour journey, you’d pay $6.
Buses are always on time.
Trains would be nice, but there are none.
As for renting a car.. I have no idea. Sorry.
Best of luck,
Tudor

Thanks Tudor, buses sound like they’re the way to go.But,and I have to claim ignorance here, you not infrequently read about drivers falling asleep at the wheel. Should I carry some cans of REd Bull or a canteen of coffee-just in case?:)

It’s not like some parts of Africa where night driving is suicide. I felt very safe in Ecuador. Day or night. Just mind your surroundings as you would anywhere else.
Red Bull is nothing. Just have some coca tea. Helps with altitude sickness too. :)

By the way, if you need a guide for the Amazon region, be it for jungle tours, camping or whatever, give this guy a call or an email: http://www.jungletoursecuador.com
He was my guide and he was great.

Thanks to the both of you for your advice.Much appreciated. Eric, I’ll be hanging out around Quito starting around 6/21. Be round and about the vicinity for several days then wandering south.Let’s stay in touch and see about hooking up for beer/dinner.
