Traveling to New York

I’m traveling to New York next month (Mid October) and looking for any advice for cheap accommodations.

I have YMCA as backup and it costs me approx $50 a night…Is there anything cheaper in and around NY? I can commute for 2 hours a day to NY, thats not a problem (If the commute is not gonna be expensive)
