U.S. Kabul Compound Media info

For those of you heading there, this is the scoop:

Media Information Sheet

Welcome to Kabul Compound, home of the coalition forces involved in Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan. You main points of contact are:

Staff Sgt. Daisy Bueno, Kabul Press Center NCOIC

E-mail: Kabul-presscenter@cfc-a.centcom.mil

Phones are not completely reliable, so please use e-mail as the primary form of communication. In order to use the phone line, call the DSN switch at 00-965-468-5000, and then ask the operator to connect you to (318) 237-1341 or call our local number at 070-276-545.

Press conferences are Monday and Saturday starting at 10 a.m. Arrive at the South Gate on Mondays and Saturdays in time to go through security (15 20 min) in order to make the 10 a.m. start time. The Wednesday conference is held at ISAF Headquarters.

Transportation is limited and traffic can be hectic. Please be aware of the gate schedule and make your place accordingly.

Media are required to have a Public Affairs escort everywhere on Kabul Compound and when accompanying any operations that originate here. This includes media leaving through the checkpoint.

We do not have accommodations for journalists. If staying overnight please make accommodations with a local hotel.

Journalists who are granted access to this base are automatically bound by the ground rules governing coverage here. You and your organization must accept the risks that exist when covering activities and operations on or around Kabul Compound. This includes all activities that originate from Kabul Compound.

NOTE: Cellular phones, SAT phones, satellite equipment, alcohol, knives and firearms are not allowed on the compound.

Work space for media and Press Center staff is limited in both the media work area and Press Center office. Please be considerate of other journalists when using resources.

Thank you and welcome to Kabul Compound. Were glad you are here!

Dear Visiting Media,
I welcome your visit here and invite you to attend our news conferences usually held on Mondays. Embed opportunities include: Afghan National Army training, Provincial Reconstruction Team operations, Civil Affairs operations, and security operations.
When you arrive please come by our office in Kabul as soon as possible so we can credential you, discuss your visit with our units and make arrangements for those visits. Budget a few days for these pre-embed activities.
We will do our best to accommodate your needs and requests; however, transportation, weather, operational factors and the large influx of media into our area may impact when, where and if we can facilitate your visit.

For any event outside the Kabul area, you need to budget time for transportation to and from the base. Military air transportation is unpredictable and journalists travel on a space-available basis. Therefore, you should allow a few days to get to the base and a few days to get back.

If you want to go on a serious combat patrol, you need to plan on a 10 14 day embed and you need to be in very good physical condition. If you dont have that kind of time or are not in the best physical condition, we will do our best to find one day events for you to attend.

For credentialing, bring two forms of photo identification and employment credentials. Please send in advance a resume, biographical summary, and a sample of your work. This will give our unit commanders a little information about you before your visit to their areas of operation. Attached to this letter is a packing list. If you have any questions about what to bring, please ask.

I look forward to meeting and working with you when you get here. We’ll do everything we can, given the conditions, to get you access to what you request.

Sincerely,

LTC Wayne Yoshioka
CPIC Commander
