usa passport telephone numbers/ e-mail

hi all, just came across this number and e-mail address which supposedly lets you talk to a person instead of getting lost in a series of prompts.  it’s not easy to find direct answers to questions so hopefully this will help.  since i’m in italy i can’t call and check it, but with any luck it will work.

also….i heard that journalists and photogs are allowed to carry two passports does anyone know about this?  many thanks,
j

The new, general telephone number is 1-877-4USA-PPT (1-877-487-2778). For TDD/TTY users, the number is 1-888-874-7793. Live operators are now available on weekdays from 8:00am to 8:00pm, Eastern Time. Twenty-four hour, 7-day access to automated information continues to be available. Callers to the previous, fee-for-service 1-900 number will, at no charge, be directed to call the new number. Another significant improvement will be the addition of e-mail access to the National Passport Information Center at [ mailto:npic@state.gov ].

Hey Jake,

I had just asked the embassy about this here the other day- you are allowed to have two as a journo- I think the second one you get is only valid for two years or something like that…….

hi jake, there was a thread about this subject a while ago, you might be able to find it. I think someone posted links to a DOS website as well.
you can get a second passport, I don’t think this option is limited to journalists — it’s designed for anyone traveling between countries hostile to each other (so they sometimes call this the “isreali passport” or the “conflict passport”) or people who travel so frequently that they need one passport to travel on, while another is having visas processed. Either of these are considered valid reasons to apply for a secondary passport, you’ll probably need a letter from an organization as well. My second passport needs to be renewed every two years.
the state department/passport agency doesn’t really advertise this second passport, so it might be easier to do this through a service like visa advisors or G3, I used visa advisors. it’ll cost you a couple hundred, but it’s pretty simple to do.
