USMC in Afghanistan say no space for embedding!
|
Little help?
I recently tried to organise a 1-2 month embed in Afghanistan with units doing combat patrols, but was swiftly told by the Kabul Press Centre that there are no spaces available.
I was going to get embedded with fellow Australian photographer Steve Dupont, but his agency was also given a very definite NO.
I spoke with some other journos here in Islamabad who think it sounds like bullshit and they’re just being difficult, so if anyone knows a possible contact at Bagram or some other backchannel that might be able to help that would be great.
Cheers,
Warrick

warrick,
when i was there last, you needed to go through the us compound in kabul.ask to see the press officer, which will certainly be out of touch for at least a few days, and bringthe usual. agency creds, photo, etc. eventually they’ll have you come back to the base and ask what your plans are. normally once they have run a background check things are straightforward, and you can pretty much ask to be embedded with any unit around the country. there undoubtedly will be a whole lot of journo’s who’ll have applied for embeds a while ago, so spots my be scarce.
hope this helps.
i think there was a thread a while ago with current contact info.

Joseph Chenelly, a leatherneck at Army Times Publishing, might be able to help you out. Or at least point you in the right direction. jchenelly@atpco.com
