Yikes! Where to Submit Subsidized Story?

Dear Fellow LS,

I just got an invitation to do a feature (photography and writing) at an Irish castle. But before they finalize everything, they’d like to know where I intend to submit the work. I’m a bit stuck. I know major newspapers and magazines do not accept stories that have been subsidized in any way. That leaves me with a significantly shorter list. Have you got any suggestions? Thank you in advance.

You could interpret the question literally.  You say they asked where you "intend to submit" the work, not where it will be published.  So tell them where you intend to "submit", but advise them that there are no guarantees it will be published.

Dear Nana,

There are some Indian travel magazines which could be interested…may not pay very well though.

Hi Nana, though I generally think Danish papers implement high standards on the editorial feature and news  pages(and please let this post be Muhammed cartoon free) and adhere to the dogma of not printing subsidized stories this is almost never the case in the Danish papers’ travel sections. Here they gladly go on sponspored cruizes or skiing trips. They do of course always tell the travel agents that they keep their right to write whatever they see fit on that particular story. If you want me to look into a couple of names for travel editors here let me know. The salaries probably aren’t great and I guess they may want to take a cut for translating as well…
You probably already know this editor: http://www.lightstalkers.org/jspencer

Happy hunting though, D
