Pricing for multimedia?

The nitty-gritty: How do you price your multimedia projects? Do you base it on circulation or the length of the project or something else entirely. I am lost…

An editor at MSNBC told me they pay a day rate for multimedia (just shooting stills) between $500 and $1,000 depending upon circumstance, but hardly less than $500 ever.
