09/14/06 – This gallery is from a collection of work in progress titled Out of Step: Faces of Straight Edge. It is a documentary portrait project that will be published as a book by Empire Press Oct. 6, 2007. The goal of the project is to dive in to the world of the straight edge community and explore the diversity within it. Straight Edge, a lifestyle decision to abstain from alcohol, smoking and drugs forever, began 25 years ago in the sweaty punk rock scene of Washington D.C. It has now spread internationally and has received much negative exposure because of a few hardline and militant factions that have surfaced in the past 10 years yet straight edge remains a positive alternative for the youth of today. Every person photographed is very different from the next, but no matter how diverse, they all share one common characteristic; they walk the straight edge.
