I’m hoping that some of you can chime in for a recommendation or a personal story on your ordeal to recover data from a crashed hard drive. I’m familiar with OnTrack advertising on the web but their initial quote is vague $500 – $2500 and uncomfortable.

I was editing important images this weekend and my Western Digital “MyBook” external Hard Drive (500GB) fell off a night stand onto a carpet this weekend. Now the darn thing won’t power up. It makes about 5 tries to spin up and then stops. I had files open when it fell so it looks like it will need a technician to open up the hard disk and replace a few parts.

Do you know anyone in New England who does this sort of thing? I would much prefer someone where I could drive up to, bring the hard disk and talk to the person… and someone who had prices in line with individuals and not with ‘corporate’ quotes.

Any help would be appreciated.
