Hi,
I have worked in Iraq from 2003 on, for Time Magazine and The New York Times and others. I have a fixer who will make the visa and any assignment fixing you need fast and easy. I live in Cairo, just a five hour flight from Baghdad. Please review my work on my web page and be sure to look at the “In the Media” link for published work. Thank you for your time.
Sincerely,
Max Becherer

I wonder if it’s a person or a “bot.”
I would suggest that Lightstalkers should implement some kind of captcha word-verification requirement
for every post and comment to help decrease the amount of bots on this site.
It would probably help to increase security on LS and might also help lower the potential for scams.
Shit’s scary.
|
fucking paranoia central here. Really need to get a grip. Really.
I’ve got her email and phone number in less clicks than it takes to write ‘scam’. jeesh…. LS is going to the dogs – no offence to any dogs reading
|
Thanks for clarifying Con O’Donoghue. I’ll take your word for it.
Mark did have a good point about the “mcmrickbrick” profile looking a little suspicious though,
especially with all the funny business that’s been going on lately.
However, I think my suggestion about implementing a captcha word-verification requirement
is still a relevant and constructive suggestion regardless, and not just blind paranoia.
It would make LS more secure and could help make many LS members feel more secure,
particularly members like myself whose security has been severely compromised.

who said mcmrickbrick was a man?
|
I don’t know who mcmrickbrick is, but for me the post just sounds like someone wanting to see portfolios to give an assignment. obviously without giving details of the story to cover. what’s wrong about that? best to all, Miguel
|
name-calling – brilliant. well done you
|
@ Con,
I do not think that is paranoia to think it could have been a scam, taking in to account the kind of approach she had when asking for possible contribuitors to an specific assigment, and I also agree it was NOT and is NOT, a professional way to deal with someone whose service you might need. It´s becoming common practice to use fake and ridiculous nicknames online in order to hide real identity, which to my point of view IS a paranoic teenager behavior. Why it´s ok to someone representing either an agency, magazine, whatever, not providing a minimal info regardin who we are dealing with, then it´s also ok that we have to give all info available about us. I think that respect and professionalism must be mutual. Nobody is doing a favor. It does not matter WHO the " contractor" is. There is something wrong going around in PR and I thing we are helping A LOT by assuming it´s ok. Takes time for a few clicks and I think you shouln´t have to.
Anyway, whatever…keep going an good luck

absolutely Jorge (and Funky earlier) you’re bang on about it being unprofessional.
I’m not protecting the original poster. No reason to. None.
Replying to the thread with accusations of it being a scam and then this being the work of a spam bot could be considered somewhat unprofessional and this is what i take offence to. Asking for some more information, on thread or PM, would be more professional.
I’ve also being accused of calling people ‘dogs’ which i haven’t. And i’ve been called a ‘fool’ which i may well be but none of this could be considered an reasonable response from a professional community. Cheapens the whole of LS IMO. As does this thread. It’s actually a bit sad.

i think that’s totally uncalled for Mark.
|
I’ve deleted my previous posts because I cannot be bothered to get involved in a pointless spat over something so trivial.
Maybe I’m paranoid or something.
|
Mark, I agree with you, no need to get into a discussion because of this.
just to let you all know, I was also contacted by mcmrickbrick, that proved to be what I suspected, an editor seeking for talent.
peace guys, all the best,
Miguel
|
Miguel,
Good for you, but..it´s ALL wrong about that. NOBODY is so important to hide identity when dealing with pros..that´s my point, but…whatever..
Peace

Indeed Mark,
But who want it these days ;).
|
I think that if we weren’t so quick on judging people and their professionalism they would show more of them. but that’s the way I see it. and I know I’m a professional, dealing with professionals. I don’t need anyone to judge me on that.
I will not get in a discussion because of this, in fact, I don’t want to get into discussions (as I did here on the past) on anything.
But I appreciate if everyone keeps an attitude of respect to me, just like I do with them. Being ironic regarding on what I may need or not (even if directed to everyone on this post) isn’t something that I like or feel like respect.
also, there are many ways of doing business. we may not like it, but it’s business.
best, M

Miguel…
I am not remotely referring to people on this specific post when I said: “ …But who want it these days ;)” ..I´m referring to the whole industry we in a way are part of. Ironic?, yeap..but not specifically toward you.
Now, regarding respect…unfortunately, I think it took long vacations from LS. Once upon a time it was a community of professionals and enthusiast who SHARED acknowledges, doubts, feelings, identity. Inflated egos were out of the game. Problems with identity and personality were far away from LS. A lot of people, who today are missed, used to CONTRIBUTE with really valuable thinking. People looking for talent showed up with real names and serious proposals.
I personally hate nicknames, and I´d never ever introduce myself to anyone, professional or not, let alone looking for “talent”, contributors, whatever not using my real name. We are responsible adults, and we must be treated as ones ( Just a thought.). To me respect is to be treated as equal, it does not matter who is on the other side of the chain, and I wouldn’t submit my work (Doesn’t matter if it’s crap or its good) with all info available to anyone who does not provide the minimal info regarding who I’m dealing with.
Yes, it is a way of doing business, does not mean it´s correct. But again, you don´t have to agree with me I m just dust and bones in this individualism comunity.
Peace,
Miguel

Hey Con, did you see this?
“Hi, as some of you noticed we had a little spam attack this morning in the On the Move section. We’re currently updating the registration process to prevent this from happening again; as you may know it’s a struggle to make it easy for people to register, but also difficult for evil robots. We’ll keep an eye on things and appreciate your understanding.”
“We’ve got a CAPTCHA installed now, on new user registration. Hopefully this will do the trick.”
