unstable networks / solutions?

I live in China, where the government kindly makes changes to things at the drop of a renminbi… and without explanation, advance notice, or apologies. Kinda frustrating for anybody who relies upon the Internet for work.

Other than setting up your own off-shore ISP, what are some solutions other members on the Lightstalkers forum rely upon? I am hearing some positive chatter about satellite phones, but the cost is astronomical. No pun intended.
