About

Currently based in Beijing, China. I am a British freelance photographer specialising in travel and documentary photography.

I finished a 1 year paid internship at Magnum Photos in their London office in 2005. Prior to this I graduated from the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne in England in Zoology. My current photographic projects stem from my interests in social and environmental issues in Asia, with specific emphasis on China. I have however lived and worked on 4 continents, spending extended periods of time in countries as diverse as Japan, Brazil, New Zealand and the United Arab Emirates.

I received a travel grant from Magnum to begin my work in China in 2005 and subsequently received sponsorship from FujiFilmUK in 2006, from the David Alan Harvey Fund for Emerging Photographers in 2008 and the Pulitzer Center On Crisis Reporting in 2009.

My work has appeared in print with publications including The Guardian, The Age, The Globe & Mail, Die Zeit, The British Journal of Photography, The Sunday Herald Magazine and The Ecologist. My notable online publications also include work with BBC News Online, Asia Society, openDemocracy.net, China Dialogue and The Digital Journalist.

I am available for editorial/corporate/advertising commissions through my contact details above. If you have any questions about me or my work, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

Exhibition in Beijing - July 4th - China's Growing Sands

Dear LS members,

On Saturday July 4th at 6 p.m. at Cafe Zarah in Beijing, a selection of images from my Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting-sponsored, China’s Growing Sands, project will go on display to the public. Located in the heart of Beijing, Cafe Zarah is a beautiful location for the first select showing of these images.

The exhibit will be on for one month, however at 6 p.m. on July 4th (Independence Day) I shall be giving a brief talk and introduction to the work and will be available to answer any questions that people may have about my project. Also, we will be projecting my multimedia presentation on China’s Growing Sands from 6 p.m., so if you are able to make it, try to get there a little earlier to catch the presentation.

If you happen to be a member of the Foreign Correspondents Club of China you’ll get 20% off a large selection of drinks on the showing of your membership card. If you’re not a member, don’t worry, the drinks are very reasonably priced anyway!

Also, all the framed prints will be on sale throughout the duration of the exhibition on a first come, first serve basis. If you would like the prints signed, either catch me at the exhibition or drop me an email to arrange.

I look forward to seeing you!

Best Wishes,
Sean
