Advices for problems on Canon 2.8/16-35mm II

I used to have the 17-35L then the 16-35L on film cameras for years – the first one much better than the second (lot of flare, so soft full open). When not using the Leicas, the lens is my all-purpose tool.
As I recently got equiped in digital with a 5DII, I was even more disapointed with the 16-35 mark I. So I decided to shift to the mark II. Can you imagine, a slight difference only ! It becomes quite ok at stop 5,6 or 8. And I have big needs in low light. That body must be a lens slayer.
It is covered with the garantee so I’m thinking about sending it back to Canon. By the the way, my partner have GREAT results with the “old” 2.8/17-35 on a D700…

Have you experienced already such troubles with that lens ? Which wide angle lens would you advise for the 5DII ?
