Seeking info on Mike Fox

Hi all,

LS member Mike Fox has been MIA since October ‘06. He had planned to spend a year or so visiting some fairly dangerous hot spots, but since the day he left he’s been totally out of touch. Calls to his wife are un-answered. He’s not replying to email. His cell has been cut off. His agency (Zuma) haven’t heard from him in ages.

I’m hoping that he’s just found a story that requires him to be very undercover and unreachable, rather that in trouble. Does anyone have any info on his whereabouts or saftey?

Much appreciated.

Mike.

Last I heard, Mike said he was traveling to DC., this was like 7-8 months ago. He’s usually on top of the communication network and responds to emails within a day or two. Yes, this is a little strange and out of character for him. As far as “undercover”, I know he was also interested in documenting White Nationalism, but I see no reason to go off the radar for that. Otherwise, he used to live in South Africa, maybe something happened at home? Either way, he likes to be reachable. Prayers are with him.

I got an email from him whilst he was in DC, saying that the last problem with his travel plans had been sorted, and he was on his way. No replies since, and his email bounces back now.

curiouser and curiouser. He was very active on LS and I remember several of his posts. MIke, do you know exactly where he was heading?

by Jon Anderson | 08 May 2007 17:05 | Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic |
I communicated with Mike last year too so I’ve been curious what he’s up to. Perhaps he just took some personal time off? If he was heading somewhere for a photo project I’m fairly certain he’d have anounced it not only to friends and family but on his blog and website too. We can hope and pray he’s sipping Pina Coladas somewhere. Let us know Mike!

I know he mentioned Darfur, and was in the process of getting a visa for somewhere in Africa that would then allow him to get into the region. I saw him a week before he left for DC, and he’d started to take on commercial work again as his travel plans were being held up. He then emailed from DC to say that it had all fallen into place, and that he was on a plane next morning. That was in October.

I haven’t heard from him for a long time I guess. I know he was documenting the White Supremacists which made me kinda nervy. His wife hasn’t heard from him? I’ll check with someone else I know…

I’m not sure if his wife has heard from him or not…she didn’t reply to any messages left for her.

His LS page says it was updated 81 days ago. Though I’m not sure how accurate these things are.

His ASMP profile

Mike is no doubt a seasoned photographer and traveler.

Last year I was in India during the bomb blast in Mumbai. My relatives got panicy and called the State Department. They were able to tell them my location and that I was not among the injured or dead. (didn’t know they knew that much about me)

Hope all is well with him.

Best wishes

Paul

This has been an ongoing question for a really long time. I was friends with Mike as was photographer Ken James. Mike told me shortly before he disappeared he was planning to go around the world to shoot for a year. Never mentioned Africa, though I know he has alot of contacts there. The rumor mill on the press line in SF comes up with nothing, and ZUMA contacted me to look for him in February. Ken and I are both concerned, and if there is any information, please let us know.

maybe if you get somebody with a know how and can crack into the site or even email???

by Haris Coussidis | 11 Jun 2007 07:06 | Kampala, Uganda |
All his emails and #s aren’t working. I heard that the only reason his personal website acct is still up is because they paid alot of money for the year. I really think he just either doesn’t want to be found, or is really knee deep in something or a little of both?. I rechecked my email, and he said an 18 month trip around the world to me last August.

The wife would seem to be the key to the answer. What city did/do they/she live in? Would she go with him? Try an electronic white pages search for her (anybody know her full name?). There are ways to track people down. If you fear foil play, DO contact the State Department. Spend a few hundred dollars on a skip/trace service.

You can run but not hide in this world…

still nothing. Very strange – perhaps its time to contact the state dept. but youve got to know where he last was or was planning on going. Im poor like y’all, but Ill put in some $.

This is reaally beginning to look like he doesn’t WANT to be found. Surely someone knows someone who knows someone? Come on – fine bunch of investigative journalists you are … pretend he’s the leader of some underground cult and finding him will be the scoop of your life. Heck, pretend he’s Osama Bin Laden. What are you gonna do to track him down? (My guess is your first stop is NOT going to be the State Department)...

I dont want to be a downer here, but has anyone thought of checking the Social Security Death Index? Granted, Michael Fox is a fairly common name, but if you eliminate everyone who died pre-2006 you should be able to figure out who, among the remaining names, is actually him, assuming that he is there at all.

I know Mike and it’s not like him at all not to be active in some sort of networking or posts. He’s always the first one to tell you what he is up too. He’s not here or on his Lexar blog site or even his personal site. Nor has he been contributing to Zuma, his agency. This is not a typical Mike Fox MO. Something in up for sure. Sadly, the word on the street here is that he’s fallen out with his wife and has taken off NOT WANTING to be found. That would explain why his wife is not returning any calls regarding him. He’s a freelancer and I don’t know any freelancer who turns off their cell phone for an hour much less let it become disconnected. Most of us in the bay area have tried to get in touch with him and haven’t had any luck. I, too was one of the ones he cancelled on at the last minute for a round of beers after being told that he was going on a long awaited road trip after last minute details had finally fallen in place. Any updates would be great. Common Mike, we’re all looking for you! Answer our posts and we’ll leave you alone if that is what you want!

OK! Mike Fox is alive and well.

Katrina Fox called a friend of mine last week and let him know that Mike is in Africa, and is planning to stay there until the spring. I don’t know where in Africa. Mike and Katrina apparently are overwhelmed at the amount of emails and calls looking for him, I think it’s just too much for him to handle right now. So mystery solved. If I hear anything more I will give an update, but I for one am very relieved.

Thanks for the update Krista! Fantastic news that Mike is well. I guess that he’s working on a big project and will tell all when he gets back!

If you’re able to read this Mike, good luck buddy!
